Information theft, also referred to as industrial espionage, comprises many facets: spying on data via spyware, copying printed designs, the verbal disclosure of information, etc. In many cases of information theft, a company’s own employees are involved – sometimes unwittingly, but usually deliberately. Unfortunately, some employees act rather carelessly when it comes to safeguarding internal company information: they talk about their work among acquaintances, accept a USB stick from third parties as an alleged promotional gift which transmits company data to a competitor via pre-installed software, naively respond to telephone enquiries, and so on. Other employees, in turn, deliberately harm their employer, perhaps out of envy or revenge, for example because they did not receive the pay rise they had hoped for.
In 2014, 950 white-collar crimes were recorded in Saarland, 289 more than in the previous year. This represents an increase of 43.7 per cent. Fraud offences with 483 cases and embezzlement with 209 cases are particularly significant. The number of unreported white-collar crimes is considerably higher, as many companies do not file charges but prefer to have incidents clarified discreetly. Especially when it comes to highly sensitive data such as design plans, developments and prototypes, companies shy away from public proceedings, as in addition to financial losses they also fear damage to their image and reputation.
